Croatian Islands You Have Never Heard Off

Unknown Croatian Islands

These are the Croatian islands of absolute peace where even cars are prohibited. It has always been known that the Croatian coast is teeming with breathtakingly beautiful places. However, if we have to choose our favorite locations, it would certainly be the islands of peace where even cars are prohibited. Morning crowds and city noise can be tiresome. Therefore, when searching for destinations, we often choose those where peace prevails. Fortunately, the Croatian coast is not only beautiful but also rich with peaceful and hospitable destinations. Even if you ever end up in a witness protection program, some of the islands below can be your choice for a safe and quiet destination.(:(:

Zlarin

Only thirty minutes away from Vodice, a town near Šibenik, this little island will not leave you indifferent. Although it is extremely small and you might think that it has nothing to offer, you would be wrong. It is adorned with the nickname ‘green island’, which perfectly describes the combination of the Mediterranean, olive trees, sea, and greenery that you will find here. For everyone who enjoys walking, the top recommendation is certainly Klepac hill. Since it is the highest point on the island, it offers a perfect view of Velebit and the island of Jabuka. Island Zlarin is known as a “coral island”. That special and rare animal found its place in the Adriatic Sea. A long history of jewelry making led to its high price at the market. Coral is an enduring substance that has had high value for centuries. Especially coral from the Adriatic sea, which has been harvested by people from Zlarin.

Susak

Susak or you call it another green jewel of the beautiful Adriatic, found its way onto our wish list of an oasis of peace. This small island has only 151 inhabitants, and it doesn’t have a single road, so even if you want to drive a car, you can’t be here. It is best known for its shallow beaches, but also for the yellowish dust that the island is made of. Regardless of its size, this island is not deprived of quality cultural monuments either. During your visit, you can visit the parish church of St. Nicholas, the chapel on Cape Darto, the Susak lighthouse, or the vineyards, which are somewhat neglected but show the enormous potential of the island. Everyone who loves cultural heritage must see the traditional costume of this island, which is somewhat different from the other traditional costumes. The costume has no sleeves, emphasizes the waist, and is the shortest of all costumes in Europe, which makes it a bit more modern, but still beautifully evokes the history of the island. The only drawback is the weak connection with the mainland, and besides the fact that it is difficult to get to the mainland, there are not too many tourists because it is often out of reach of travel agencies.

Prvić

Another small island where you won’t find cars is Prvić, which is located in the immediate vicinity of Šibenik. Although it has slightly more inhabitants than Susak, it is still one of the smaller islands of the Adriatic. There are two fishing settlements on the island; Prvić Luka and Šepurine, and they are connected by a road only one kilometer long. History buffs will know that Prvić bears the name of a famous scientist and physicist, so it is often referred to as Faust’s island. On this island you can visit two churches – one, the smaller one, is dedicated to St. Jelena Križarica, while the other is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Baroque lovers will not be disappointed either. On Šepurine is the baroque summer house of the Vrančić brothers, which leaves you breathless.

Unije

Although it has less than a hundred inhabitants, this island rivals the others in terms of natural beauty. The island is a real oasis for all lovers of botany and has as many as 20 thousand olive trees. There is only one settlement in Unije, which is located on a gentle slope next to the largest bay on the west coast. This small island is a great choice for anyone looking for a bit of romance and peace, which you will definitely get here. Thanks to its good geographical location, water sources, and vast fertile soil, Unije has had its inhabitants throughout all historical periods. The name of the island probably comes from (he)neios, which means “field” in Greek. You can get to Unije by boat from Mali Lošinj or by catamaran from Rijeka. Upon arrival at Unije, you will immediately notice that there are no cars here, the main means of transport are tractors, which the locals use to transfer goods from the ship and which they use to cultivate the fields.
